Having fresh herbs whenever you need them for your special dishes or drinks is such a great convenience. There is never a doubt that there is a certain herb available. It is always fresh and ready to be used when needed. If you have not tried it yet, now is a great time to learn how to plant an indoor herb garden.
Items that are needed:
- Herb seeds
- Pot or container
- Pottery shards or gravel
- Planting soil or make your own soil mixture
What to do next
First you need to decide what type of herbs you would like to plant. Basil, cilantro, chives, marjoram, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme are herbs that will thrive well indoors. Each herb should be planted in its own pot. You don’t have to use store bought pots if you don’t want to. You can use empty yogurt cups or any container that will give good ventilation. Punch holes in the bottom of the container and place it on a saucer to catch the runoff.
Place pottery shards or gravel in the pot first for drainage. Add the planting soil or create your own soil mixture with a bit of potting soil, sand and a bit of lime.
Check the seed packets for how each seed is required to be planted. Add the seeds and mist the soil with water making the soil moist. If there is drainage pour if off. Never over water because it could rot your roots.
Keep the pots in the window with southern exposure. If you do not have enough sun you can always buy fluorescent lights or grow lights.
With such a demand for fresh herbs, there are other ways to grow them right in your own kitchen. Aerogarden is a great way to grow your herbs and it covers everything needed for your plants. You don’t even have to worry about the lighting or any other aspect that may detain your herbs from growing.
Keep an eye out for pests or bugs on your herbs. If you see some insects try spraying the plant with warm soapy water, if you do not want to use harsh chemicals. It should kill them.
Make sure that your plant is not near harsh temperatures. If your window has a heater under it, that may not be the best place to leave your plants.
You also have the option of using herb clippings to start your herb garden. It may be easier to manage if you have never grown anything before.
Invest in a mister and keep your herbs sprayed and moist.
Now you can pinch off your herb plants whenever you need them. The more you use them the more they will grow. It is the way of nature.
