Getting Creative With Garden Design

flower gardenHaving a garden can work great as a decorative fixture that makes your yard look great. The key to getting creative with garden design is to think like an artist. Functionality will always come first (What do you want to grow?), especially if you’re growing a vegetable garden, but functionality doesn’t have to limit creativity. If you want your yard to look appealing when guests come over, then using your garden to add an element of beauty to your outdoor space is a great way to do it. Below are three steps to take to make your garden design more creative.

Begin with Imagination

Small garden or large garden, there are many ways you can use a garden to accent the look of your backyard. For example, imagine creating a brick walkway from your back porch to a large brick circle in the middle of your yard that is surrounded by a garden of colorful flowers. Use this space to hold some patio furniture and a small fire pit in the middle, and you’ve create a space for your visitors to be surrounded by the garden you’ve carefully designed. Mix your flowers in with some vegetable plants and you’ve created a garden that looks great and produces.

You can get creative with the shape of your garden and the way you section the different plants in your garden. Arrange the colors of your plants so that they complement each other. Think about decorate elements to add to your garden as well. Many people break up the monotony of their gardens using decorative rocks or stones and even adding decorative fountains. Come up with your own ideas, or borrow ideas that others have come up with when you look for garden design ideas online. A great resource that most people are probably aware of is Pinterest. Simply type in “garden design ideas” into the search and you’ll find a ton of great ideas.

Sketch Your Ideas

If you go outside and just start working on your garden, you might get lucky and have the ideas in your head perfectly translated into exactly what you’re wanting in your backyard. However, when you’re thinking like an artist, it’s a really good idea to do some pre-planning first. Grab a sketchbook, and after you’ve looked at your backyard and imagined what your new garden will look like, start taking those ideas and putting them to paper. Don’t worry if you’re not a great artist. You just want to get the ideas down so that you know what you need to do to take your ideas and make them a reality. If you are an artist, have fun with it. Grab some colored pencils and really process what you want your garden to look like. Sketching is great because it’s a helpful step to go from concept to completion.

Make Your Ideas a Reality

Now that you know what you want your garden to look like because you’ve sketched it out, it’s time to turn your great ideas into a completed garden project. This means taking your sketch and making a list of all the materials you’ll need and breaking the project down by steps. Once you’ve done that, it’s just a matter of doing the work and enlisting some help if you need it.

Designing a garden gives you a great opportunity to flex your creative muscles and make something you can be proud of. If you follow these steps, your garden will be a great decorative element in your yard and you’ll soon be having your friends wanting you to design the gardens in their yards.
