It doesn’t take a lot of space to have a garden. Even if you live in a small apartment, you can still have a small garden. They come in all shapes and sizes and will accommodate one person or a whole family. It is up to you how big or how small you make it. A 16 square foot garden is big enough to hold about 130 plants, which would be a lovely little addition to the family home. Learning how to build a planter box on the cheap would really be beneficial to anyone.

What will you need?

1) 4 pieces of untreated 2X4s or scraps of wood you may have lying around

2) 8 to 16 wood screws or deck screws

3) Weed barrier cloth

4) Drill

5) Saw

Putting it together

The wood that you choose can be scraps that you have lying around your home or untreated wood from the store. Determine the size that you want the box to be and cut it to be that size. The wood should be untreated because the chemicals would seep into your soil. There should be four sides to your box. Nail the corners with the wood screws until you have made your square or rectangle. It is not necessary to make a bottom to the box. It can be placed on the concrete or ground just as it is. Before you place it on the ground, lay out the weed barrier cloth where you want your box to go. That is pretty much all there is to it. You can make the boxes as deep as you want as well, so come up with your own design and go to town.

Now dress your box however you want. You can add compost and potting soil and begin to plant whatever you like. Keep it watered and well maintained and it will reward you with a wonderful harvest.
